Ariah Stapp, a Marysville Getchell Junior, presented "How Our Actions are Destroying Earth's Ocean's " to the National Marine Educator Association on Tuesday July 25th. Her presentation on microplastics was informative and inspiring. She first became interested in the topic during the plankton lab in her Marine Biology course when the class kept finding microplastics instead of plankton during the fall plankton tow. This led her on the journey to find out how microplastics are entering the water system, the effect on larger organisms, i.e. albatross, and what actions are and can be taken to protect our ocean. When asked during the Q & A if Ariah felt that there was hope for our ocean, Ariah responded that she is encouraged by the efforts of people around her to find sustainable alternatives to plastics.
