For the past ten years, Marysville School District and the City of Marysville partner together in support of water quality education for our students. To teach Surface Water at the elementary level, we have chosen Sound Salmon Solutions, who run Jones Creek, to provide all Marysville School District 5th graders a Jones Creek Field Experience--a culminating experience for the Jones Creek curriculum provided by the district for each fifth grade classroom. Students measure water quality, identify stream macroinvertebrates, and use their results to determine the health of Jones Creek. This ‘nature’ experience at Jones Creek offers a rich variety of information to spark students’ motivation to explore and discover actively which is essential for developing the ability to observe, evaluate, and use the information that is available around them. There is no cost to the district or the students, and it’s been part of an ongoing program in Marysville to support water quality education.
