District Adopts Multilingual Learning WIDA Model to Improve Student Outcomes in English Language Acquisition

The district has adopted the WIDA Model, which assists students in language acquisition and academic skill development.

Msvl. WA - The Marysville School District is thrilled to announce our Multilingual Learning (MLL)  program has implemented a significant improvement that is designed to set our MLL students up for success in learning English. Students receiving MLL services now have access to language acquisition instruction and assessment through the WIDA (World-class Instructional Design and Assessment) Model.

According to the WIDA webpage, the WIDA Model “is a suite of English language proficiency assessments for grades K-12. [The assessments] can be administered at any time during the school year, depending on the needs of the district, school, teacher, or student.” The WIDA Model is designed in direct alignment with the annual state assessment students take to measure their English language proficiency.

We proudly provide MLL services at each elementary, middle, and high school in the Marysville School District. Our MLL program staff consistently looks for ways to improve student outcomes, including gaining proficiency on the state assessment. The latest data from the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) states that more than 12 percent of students in the Marysville School District - around 1,200 - qualify as multilingual language learners. Student proficiency in English language acquisition has been lower than anticipated, and the new model provides the tools students and staff need to improve in this area. The state assessment occurs annually, and the testing window for students for this school year begins in February.

The Marysville School District is committed to ensuring successful outcomes for each student. Adopting the WIDA Model ensures the district and MLL staff can best support our students as they learn English.
