Totem Middle School

Totem Middle School is our Spotlight feature this week!

6th grade students at Totem were recently given a poetry writing assignment. For the assignment, students read a Newsela article titled  "Introduction to Found Poetry" and were asked to choose one out of six different types of poetry:

  1. Dada Poetry

  2. Cut-Up And Remix Poetry

  3. Blackout Poems

  4. Erasure Poems

  5. Centos

  6. Acrostic Poems And Golden Shovels

The students were asked to reflect on the past couple of months that have brought many different challenges in our world. They had an opportunity to reflect on their experiences during this time and write a poem. Students were asked to keep their poem appropriate for school,  but aside from that there were no rules. "It’s your poem, your feelings, your experience, your story."

Next, they were to select one of the poetry styles listed above and write their own original poem and to include a picture to help describe their poem.

We are spotlightly three individual pieces of the student's work from Kylie C., Madison G., and Lili P.
