Music4Life Information Night Tonight! Did you know that children who participate in instrumental music activities do better in math, science, history, international languages, literature, reading, writing, and computer science, in addition to what it teaches in terms of teamwork and self-discipline? Not all students want to participate in instrumental music, but for those who do, and whose families cannot afford a musical instrument, this becomes an insurmountable barrier to the full basic education guaranteed to all students by the Washington State Constitution. The Marysville School District has partnered with Music4Life to bring musical instruments into the hands of students who may not otherwise be able to participate. Music4Life (www.Music4Life.org) is a community-wide activity that was started as a demonstration project for Seattle Public Schools and is now being implemented in many school districts in the region including Marysville. Music4Life provides hundreds of ready-to-play musical instruments at no charge to participating public school districts. We hope you will join us tonight, Thursday, February 21, at 7:00 PM for the informational meeting to learn more about the Music4Life program and opportunity!

Skill # 2: Asking Questions: Questions are helpful in the therapeutic environment because they allow you to learn more. The type of questions that you ask will set the tone of the session and the entire counseling process. Questions occur in two forms. Closed Ended: A closed question is the practice of asking a question that can be answered as a ‘yes’ or ‘no’. Open Ended: An open question is necessary to gather information. An open question is one that cannot be answered with a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ and it requires reflection or exploration.. A Brief Overview of Black History Month Black History Month officially began in 1976, when President Gerald R. Ford asked Americans to "seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history." Every year since then, every American president has dedicated February as African American History Month. The first celebration of African American contributions to the United States was established by the historian Carter G. Woodson. The event was held in February 1926 and was called Negro History Week. The week in February included the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln (February 12, 1809) and Frederick Douglass (born in February 1818). Over the years, more Americans, black and white, joined the celebrations each February. In the 1960s, the civil rights movement further emphasized the impact of African Americans in American culture and throughout United States history. Follow the link to bring the celebration of Black History Month into your classroom or home with activities, lesson plans, book resources, and interactive histories. https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/collections/teaching-content/black-history-month/ GET CONNECTED @MarysvilleSD or visit msd25.org for the latest updates from your school district.

CTE students at MP in teacher Chuck Nichols Advanced Manufacturing / Aerospace course had the opportunity to tour training and employment facilities last Wednesday. They went to EvCC's Advanced Manufacturing Training & Education Center AMTEC to participate in Manufacturing Day which was designed to show high school students the wide variety of careers to explore in the manufacturing and aerospace industry. They met with instructors and students in the welding, machining, fabrication, 3D design and more and learned about the training requirements and area job possibilities. They were treated to lunch and then boarded the bus to Arlington to tour AMT Senior Aerospace. We were not able to take photos for security reasons (students suffered a bit as they handed their cell phones over at the front desk :) ). We know that this experience of seeing the "hands on" training and work that is available to them will help them in crafting their post high school plans.

UPDATE - 6:34 AM: This morning, school and district administration met with school staff. The safety of students is our top priority and staff has been reminded to be extra vigilant. School will run on a normal schedule, and Marysville Pilchuck will have extra police and staff presence as students arrive and throughout the day. If you choose to keep your child home today, please make sure to call the attendance line at 360-965-2001. Absences will be excused. Safety Notification, 4:10 PM: On Tuesday, September 25, at approximately 2:30 p.m., school administration became aware of a handwritten message on a bathroom wall at Marysville Pilchuck High School. The message stated that there would be a shooting on Thursday. We take all information of this nature seriously and our staff immediately put a safety plan in motion. We notified the Marysville Police Department and out of an abundance of caution we felt it important to notify our families. We continue to work with law enforcement in our decision-making process and plan to operate school on a normal schedule tomorrow. Parents and students will be notified of any changes. Please know that safety is our top priority. We will take all precautions to keep all students and staff safe. Read the complete letter at https://goo.gl/z6eqSJ

The grant-funded Engineering Week started three years ago to help teachers gain more expertise in engineering, but grew into an event that includes students and parents, too. It took place during the first full week of school for the Marysville students, but before UW students started classes." Read more at https://goo.gl/1FXXE8

Chances are your child will need to miss a few days of school this year. While some absences might seem more excusable, the impact is actually the same whether your child is sick, ditching or taking a family trip. Any absence makes it harder for your child to keep up with the everyday classroom learning that is needed to grow and succeed. Some absences are unavoidable; but too many will make your child fall behind and they might not be able to catch up. Save absences for when it is absolutely necessary and make sure they are in #SchoolEveryDay!

As early as elementary school, students who miss just two school days each month are more likely to fall behind in reading, writing and math, even if the absences are excused. While some challenges to a child’s attendance are unavoidable, it’s important to understand the impact of each absence. Parents can prepare their children for a lifetime of success by making regular school attendance a priority and understanding the reasons for their child’s absences. "This year Oregon State became known for overcoming all obstacles, leaving a long trail of opponents in the dust as the Beavers made a habit of winning games when trailing or facing elimination. And Nobach, the pride of Marysville Pilchuck High School, personified that characteristic with the way he was able to overcome repeated injuries." https://goo.gl/m9g2QQ

Good morning, families. A collision on I-5 between Smokey Point and Marysville earlier this morning is causing major traffic delays for the morning commute. At this time two lanes of traffic are open and alternate routes are being used, also congesting and slowing traffic in those areas and creating a 5 - 10 mile back up. This will cause delays in some of our school bus routes this morning. No buses or district vehicles were involved in the collision. If you live in areas where access to I-5 is used, buses will arrive to pick up your child but they may be late. Additional information is available on local news stations.

UPDATE @ 4:18 PM: NWRDC is reporting continued outages at their facility which provides us with Skyward, IEPOnline, WESPAC and Employee Access. They are reporting the outage will continue through tomorrow and Wednesday. We will continue to keep you updated as we learn more. Attention Families: This afternoon we received word that Skyward has a system-wide outage due to a bad firmware patch applied to all of their network switches, which has made all of their services inoperative. We do not have an ETA on the restoration of services at this time, just that they are working with the switch vendor to replace the switches at NWRDC. WSIPC is saying Skyward may not be available going into tomorrow, Monday, April 23 and we are working on a contingency plan. We will let you know just as soon as services are restored.
