Marysville School District Boundary Change Process

Update

February 19, 2020

Leading up to the boundary change proposal submitted by the committee, initial discussions about the high school small learning communities and high school boundaries began early during the 2017 - 2018 school year. In August 2018, following a comprehensive community engagement process (Dream Big) around what parents and guardians wanted to see for their children, and professional consultant studies around the high school small learning communities, the Board of Directors made a decision to move to feeder pattern boundaries for the two comprehensive high schools; Marysville Getchell and Marysville Pilchuck.

Since the 2008 - 2009 school year, Marysville’s high schools have been without boundaries and have used a bussing system of “shuttling” students to their preferred school. Beginning with the 2018 - 2019 school year, for student academic, equity, access, and district fiscal responsibility, the small learning community design was dissolved at both high schools yet the bus shuttling continued creating the necessity to create feeder pattern boundaries to the schools, which over time, will significantly decrease transportation costs. To move forward in the process, a committee was formed by the Board that included parents, community members, staff, and students to study enrollment and boundaries. The committee was charged by the Board of Directors to create feeder boundaries, kindergarten through twelfth grade for the two comprehensive high schools. They began meeting in March of 2019 and on December 9, 2019, the committee's recommendation was presented to the Board of Directors.

Following a series of community meetings, Board of Director work study sessions, and a community engagement process to gather feedback on the Enrollment and Demographics Committee’s recommendation for the proposed boundary change, the Board of Directors has asked for additional information prior to making a final decision on the proposal. The Board will meet with the Enrollment and Demographics Committee on February 27 at 6:30 pm at the Service Center Board Room to learn more about the committee process used to make the recommendation for the proposed boundary change. They will then hold a follow up work study session on February 28 at 2:00 to further discuss the proposal.

The committee’s proposal is summarized in a one-pager shared with the Board of Directors on December 9. Click HERE to read the summary which also includes access to the detailed work of the committee including a comprehensive final report.
